Billionaire Calvin Lo is CEO of R.E. Lee International, the world’s largest life insurance broker, with around US$1 billion of premiums placed annually on behalf of ultra-high-net-worth individuals. The Hong Kong-based businessman, investor and philanthropist also has financial links to F1, with his net worth valued at just shy of US$2 billion. He devotes his time to running his businesses, which include R.E. Lee Capital, an asset management company with US$8 billion of funds invested and his private investment company, R.E. Lee Octagon, which has substantial interests in automotive engineering, rare earth metals and luxury hotels among other interests, as well as his charitable causes that are close to his heart. As well as advising UHNWIs who are buyers of multi-million-dollar life insurance policies, he personally assists them with wealth structuring and succession planning. Insurance policies typically range from US$10 million through to US$200 million. Mr Lo’s clients are among the top 50 wealthiest families in their countries of origin, including the UK and US, and they are keen to preserve and protect their enormous wealth.
In 2022, Mr Lo planned to grow R.E. Lee International outside of Asia, with a focus on opening more offices throughout Europe, including London. His team instructed PR Superstar to secure interviews with key media in the UK and Asia to raise his personal profile and that of his companies and investments, as well as his multiple charities, in financial, business and luxury lifestyle media outlets.
Being a prestigious media title with international reach, I offered up an exclusive interview with Mr Lo to The Financial Times who produced an indepth feature on the inspirational entrepreneur, sending out their own photographer to stage a photo shoot at his offices in downtown Hong Kong. I stressed to the Editor that the secretive billionaire rarely gives media interviews to help whet their appetite. As a follow-up, I arranged further photo shoots with other leading luxury publications such as Esquire and Tatler, where I secured double page and even four-page spreads on Mr Lo.
In addition to securing many business, financial and lifestyle-focused features on the once-reclusive billionaire in newspapers and magazines both in the UK and Asia, I arranged TV interviews with Mr Lo with the likes of CNBC, Bloomberg, Reuters and CNN International to raise his profile among the world’s ‘movers and shakers’ including potential clients and investors.
To keep the press interested, I also offered up new angles such as Mr Lo launching the world’s biggest jewellery investment fund worth a cool $1.1 billion, which is actively buying up the most highly-prized and collectible jewellery from the world’s most prestigious jewellery houses such as Van Cleef, Graff, Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany & Co, and De Beers. Furthermore, the media were scrambling for interviews after I revealed that Mr Lo was in talks to launch a brand new F1 team, as well as having ongoing discussions to invest in one or more of the current 10 Formula One teams – the pinnacle of which was a Zoom meeting between Mr Lo and the BBC’s Chief F1 correspondent, as well as stories in multiple national newspapers.
After starting work with Mr Lo back in 2021, PR Superstar has been retained to provide personal PR services for 2023.
