Background and Brief

Serial entrepreneur Lee McAteer caught the wrestling bug as a young boy when his parents took him to watch a live match in Manchester where two of the sport’s legends, Ric Flair and Bret Hart, battled it out. WWE has emerged as big business and a social media powerhouse with over half a billion followers across its accounts – with WWE superstar John Cena among the world’s most popular athletes with 44M followers on Facebook and 11.5M on Twitter. A grand total of 25 years later, McAteer, now aged 34, is still as madly in love with wrestling as ever and has now turned his lifelong passion into a booming business. Salford-based Wrestling Travel creates bespoke packages to the world’s best wrestling events, including WWE’s WrestleMania and Royal Rumble. Taking inspiration from WWE’s founder Vince McMahon, McAteer is on a mission to capture a slice of the wrestling market which today is a global phenomenon. He signed up PR Superstar to help spread the word.

Campaign and Results

I crafted a newsworthy press release angled around how wrestling superfan Lee McAteer is grappling for a piece of the billion-dollar WWE pie after launching his Wrestling Travel company – the only one of its kind in the world, helping UK fans to book their wrestling trips to the US and beyond. This soon caught the attention of the press, with three media requests alone from the BBC asking for interviews with McAteer, spanning radio, TV and online. The release was sent to business and sports editors, plus WWE writers.

More high-profile coverage followed after I publicised a partnership between Wrestling Travel and Global Force Entertainment, run by WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett. I arranged for press interviews with the WWE legend in exchange for prominent mentions of Wrestling Travel in resulting articles, plus high-authority backlinks to the Wrestling Travel website from online coverage, with one national journalist penning a grand total of four stories!

To entice journalists further, they were offered UK trips to wrestling matches, which drew interest from Men’s Health to GQ and UNILAD.
